Established in 1974, The Lexington Ballet is Central Kentucky's premier performing company for classical and contemporary ballet. The Lexington Ballet, comprised of a school and company, is proud to have brought 39 years of excitement, magic and artistic vision to Kentucky. The Lexington Ballet presents classical and new ballet repertoire in Lexington and surrounding areas.
The Lexington Ballet is proud of its 40 year heritage and of bringing another strong year of entertainment and education to central Kentucky.
The ballet has demonstrated artistic and financial achievement with the 2012-2013 seasons and began the 2013-2014 by winning the Commerce Lexington Phoenix Award. 2014-2015 looks to be equally exciting, starting with an international tour to Nicaragua.
· The growing professional company performances reach a wider, more diverse audience by bringing performances to new venues such as the Lyric Theatre and Cultural Arts Center, the EKU Center for the Arts in Richmond, the Betty Hamilton Center for the Performing Arts in Corbin, and Button Auditorium in Morehead. There will be many opportunities for community youth to attend these performances at special school rates.
I have been involved with the Lexington Ballet for nine years and in that time I have learned that there is so much more that pretty tutus. I've been awed by the athletic training and talent of the dancers and the discipline, strength, and passion that carries into every part of their lives. I've seen students come in as preschoolers and graduate as highly-focused successful adults who apply what they have learned to a myriad of career choices from dance to engineering and medicine.
This summer I have had the special opportunity to be part of the ballet's restructuring. During a 90 day period, a new Board of Directors formed, established new financial management policies, and created new by-laws based on best practices of leading ballet companies. We have had the pleasure of seeing success in action during the summer events. The summer performance season included five different programs at Ballet in the Vines and Ballet Under the Stars. The Summer Intensive school program attracted students from surrounding counties and we were proud to to extend scholarships to three international students. In its third year, MAD-camp grew to a new location, with additional staff bringing new talent in Music, Art, and Dance.
The upcoming year promises to be one of the best with Luis Dominguez directing favorites such as The Firebird, The Nutcracker, and Cinderella as well as new works and sponsored events. The company dancers; Lauren Tenney, Evan Pitts, Megan Coleman, Brittany Butler, Ayako Hasebe, and Anna Craig have truly gifted Lexington with their talent, energy, and commitment.
The school, directed by Nancy Dominguez, boasts an entirely professional staff and provides the finest ballet training in the area. The future is indeed bright and I've very proud to be part of it.
