Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide the best quality theater we can produce for our community. As a community theatre we accomplish our mission through:

1) Involving volunteers in all aspects of our organization;

2) Providing educational opportunities to people of all ages;

3) Maintaining a sound business structure which is fiscally responsible.

Background Statement

Founded in 1987, Woodford County Theatrical Arts Association is a community theatre whose mission is to provide the best quality live theatre we can by offering a season of engaging productions and life-long learning opportunities in the arts for all ages.  We produce 5 shows per season: two musicals and three plays-balancing the needs of our audience demographics: families with young children, senior citizens and college students/young professionals--with an increasing sensitivity to the growing cultural diversity of the region and a devotion to fiscal responsibility.

With a professional staff, we offer a handful of paid contracts (directors, designers and instructors, chiefly) as well as scores of onstage and behind the scenes volunteer opportunities for amateurs and theatre professionals willing to donate their time.  With a healthy mix of professional and amateur talent, we intend to cultivate not only an appreciation of live theatre, but also valuable and employable skills for our participants. 

WCTAA serves in residence at the Falling Springs Arts and Recreation Center at 275 Beasley Road, Versailles KY. Having been instrumental in its creation and design, WCTAA leases the 14,400 square foot theatre for $1 per year (in 5-year renewable lease periods) and $1 surcharge per ticket sold. The facility contains a 304 seat auditorium, administrative and box offices, areas for scenic and costuming construction, dressing rooms, "green room" and storage. The stage is 32' deep from rear to front and 44' across from proscenium wall to wall. The full complement of lighting/sound systems is controlled from the technical booth at the rear of the auditorium, with catwalk access to and from the booth and backstage. Altogether, these facilities afford us the ability to conduct performances, rehearsals, classes, concerts, meetings, presentations, parties and volunteer activities - as well as the means by which to design, build and store most of the items and materials needed for productions.

Impact Statement

Woodford Theatre celebrates its 30th Anniversary this season 2017/2018, proving its success as a community theatre that draws patrons from all over central Kentucky.  This year alone we increased in season subscription sales, annual fund donations, and ticket sales by another 10 percent!  Since the hiring of our full time Education Director, the program has grown by leaps and bounds with The Girl Project, Woodford Theatre Young Artists, and Summer Academy in our programming.  It is the mission of The Girl Project to empower teenage girls to challenge the misrepresentation of women and girls in contemporary American media culture. We purchased new mainstage curatains, are renovating our back storage room into a classroom space, and have a new scissor lift. We have recently hired an Assistant to Education Director and Assistant to Technical Director.

We have even bigger goals set for the next five years as we begin a capital campaign! We plan to raise $300,000 over the next five years for capital improvements. Woodford Theatre prides itself on solid production values, and it is our goal to increase that even more over the next few years with upgrades to equipment and facilities.  

Needs Statement

1.) Secure a full time staff position in the area of set and lighting design. ($30,000)

2.) Increase production stipends for costuming, teaching assistant, and adding various production staff positions while including for the first time, production manager, wardrobe, custodian, and box office. ($20,000)

3.) We would also like to offer traveling vouchers in the amount of $100 to actors. ($10,000)
(These top three areas would require an increase of $60,000 in the annual operating budget)

4.) Woodford Theatre needs theatrical equipment upgrades and improvements: Lighting system upgrades (approx. $100,000), Stage curtains, main and legs ($28,000), a Cyc ($3000), Sound upgrades (approx. $15,000), shop tools, protective cage for the shop ($15,000).  

5.) Valuable real estate in our building is being used for storage of set and props, which takes up room that could be used for classes and rehearsals.  A new storage space on the property is essential; a container or a building ($50,000 to $150,000).   

CEO/Executive Director Statement

The measure of success for Woodford Theatre as an arts organization must be determined both by quantity and quality. Quality is objective; it is easier to evaluate our success based solely on box office receipts and audience numbers, donations, and the numbers of our volunteers and actors interested in auditioning. Quality is more difficult to define, aside from reviews, positive “buzz,” and the accumulation of anecdotal assessments we receive. Thus, in order to be responsible stewards to the theatre’s mission and operations – and to measure the qualifiable aspects of our work, we must pay close attention to the satisfaction of our audience members, of our production participants, and of our students and their families.

While we are, and wish to remain, a community theatre, we also wish to fulfill a community need by providing opportunities for regional artists to be paid – which has the additional benefit of helping to insure the best possible quality of productions.  In the 2016/17 season, Woodford Theatre will have paid approximately 100 artists in our season: directors, musicians, choreographers, designers and technicians. Walking the line between “community” and “professional” theatre can be tricky, but we have succeeded in creating an environment in which our volunteer actors and artists feel that their work is shown to its best advantage by the support of the paid professionals.

Woodford Theatre has grown to be considered a “Theatre for the Region”, as we increase our numbers that commute from surrounding counties, Anderson, Fayette, Franklin, Scott, Jessamine, and Mercer.

Board Chair Statement

Woodford Theatre was born nearly thirty years ago out of a need for and a love of the creative arts in Woodford County, Kentucky. Woodford Theatre like so many arts venues has always depended highly on the generosity of patrons. Today that charity is as important as ever. In fact, we could argue that it is more critical than ever since these days so much emphasis is placed on science and technology. And who can dispute the importance of either? After all, science and technology move us – their study has taken us into the air in planes, across land in cars, and over oceans in ships. But we are human beings and perfectly capable of being moved in ways that do not involve engines or aeronautics. Our hearts and our minds are moved in a multitude of ways on any given day by the written and the spoken word; actors showcasing the words of playwrights send our imaginations on incredible journeys.

That is the truth of the matter then – science and technology do not survive without the power of the theatre. The fact that we can manipulate our surroundings with words and stories and fantasies and myths, gives us the power to believe we can also change our surroundings with steel and wood and engines and microscopes. We do not think or progress in compartments. We are not creatures purely of science or of poetry. To be whole and full, we need all these things.

Unfortunately, so much has been done in education and the workforce lately that places all our eggs into the technology basket that I think we are missing out on the humanity and the compassion that exists within the theatre. Our plays are microcosms of who we are and what we think we can become. I support the theatre because it is endangered. I support the theatre because it is so often relegated these days and forced to survive on what is left over. But as, Karen Armstrong, one of my favorite non-fiction writers explained in her book about the history of myth, “Like science and technology, mythology . . . is not about opting out of this world, but about enabling us to live more intensely within it.”

Woodford Theatre needs people to give. Woodford Theatre is a vibrant, beating heart in the middle of Bluegrass Country where the staff and volunteer actors devote their time, energy, and emotion to providing the people of Central Kentucky an outlet for their mythology -- a way to exist “more intensely” in their lives.

But Woodford Theatre serves this need on a budget that struggles to break even each year. The Theatre needs equipment – lighting and sound as well as replacements for outdated computers and office tools. Our needs are many and our resources few and hard fought. We are asking anyone who comes to this site, all who know the value in weaving tales of delight and realism, to give to us. We appreciate donations, large and small, and assure you that they will go to the good cause of stimulating the imaginations of young and old alike.

Woodford County Theatrical Arts Association serves the entire Central Kentucky region.  While we are based in Woodford County, our patron base includes citizens from all the surrounding counties, and even people who have come from out of state.  While we started out serving primarily local audiences, we have grown into a true regional community theatre, with audiences and participants spread throughout the Bluegrass.

Experience  Trish Clark has been acting, teaching, directing and producing in the Central Kentucky area for thirty years. A graduate of both Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky, she went on to teach theatre at the School for Creative and Performing Arts, Tates Creek High School and Paul Laurence Dunbar High School (whereupon she was selected as Fayette County High School Teacher of the Year and nominated as Kentucky High School Teacher of the Year) before serving as Outreach Coordinator for the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre. Trish has served as Artistic Director and Education Director for both the Lexington Shakespeare Festival and Kentucky Conservatory Theatre/SummerFest. Currently she is under contract with the Kentucky Humanities Council to portray Mary Todd Lincoln with their touring Chautauqua performers series and serves as an advisor to Lexington's Project See Theatre.

Description The Girl Project will begin with bi-monthly workshops over 6 months. Fifteen national guest artists will be invited to lead the girls in writing, performance and dance. Female leaders from our community will discuss and introduce long-term goal setting, nutrition, yoga and Mayan culture.  There will be a closed container where girls can ask anonymous questions, discuss current events and share their stories and their writing in a safe, controlled environment. This will help deepen their understanding of the issues we collectively and individually face in today’s society and what action they can take in order to help make change. As the workshops come to a close, a two-week writing intensive will examine the work the girls have done with the teaching artists and decide what work will be fine-tuned to share with an audience. Two writers will devise a piece that will be written by all the girls. This piece will be performed at multiple venues and will travel within the community.

Description The Senior Troupe aims to involve any senior citizen who wishes to be a part of the art of theatre and performance, no matter the issues that come with aging. There are a number of creative ways to work with screens and stands where scripts can be in front of the actor to ease the frustration of memorization. We will address wheelchair bound, and other physical and heath needs. With accepting all aging issues, our main goal is to keep the aging active and involved as they work together, collaborate and feel the sense of unity. The relationships and the connections are vital to their well being.  Over the course of 12 weeks, seniors will meet one day each week for a 2 1/2 hour session.  They will read and discuss plays, have physical and vocal warm ups, and select scenes to study from the plays they read.  They will pick up more classes as final weeks involve rehearsals of scenes or the a cut version of the play and a performance in front of an invited audience.

Description Our summer theatre education program will give students the opportunity to explore creativity in a stimulating and safe environment. Live theatre inherently pulls us away from our computer screens, media and social networking and provides face to face emotional and physical engagement which stimulates intuitive, sensitive and more positive behavior in peer groups. By working with a variety of teaching artists, taking classes, rehearsing and mounting their own play students will be left with a sense of accomplishment and a revitalized desire to engage with adults and peers. They will develop valuable life skills: focus, commitment and discipline, a spirit of cooperation working in an ensemble and creative problem solving skills.  Over 4 weeks students will be in the academy from 9-6. The mornings will be designated to voice, dance, movement, ensemble and acting classes with multiple teaching artists.  The afternoons will be designated to putting together a final performance.

Description At Woodford Theatre we believe “the play is the thing” – just not the ONLY thing! We are committed to providing our audiences with a little “something extra”. The Something Extra Series is a series of added performances and events geared toward community outreach and will include several limited engagement events that will be sprinkled throughout the regular subscription season. These events are intended to celebrate our theatre and to build our relationships with our patron’s. We hope the series will enhance each patron’s experience at the Woodford Theatre.
