Statements
Mission Statement Providing free legal services for those experiencing discrimination in housing.
Background Statement
The Lexington Fair Housing Council in partnership with The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development has created a checks and balances system for the whole of housing transactions.  We are the victim advocate arm of that system, helping those who have been discriminated against navigate through the legal process.
Impact Statement
Serving the commonwealth of Kentucky in order to eradicate discrimination based on the Fair Housing Acts 7 protected classes.
Ex:

September 19, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — The KentuckyCommissionon Human Rights Board of Commissioners recently ruled on discriminationcomplaintsthat included a $42,000 conciliation agreement resulting from a housing discrimination complaint brought by the Lexington Fair Housing Council:

Complaint Number 1487-H, The Lexington Fair Housing Council versus Burlington Oaks Apartments in Burlington, Ky.: The Lexington Fair Housing Council alleged discrimination based ondisabilityin housing, a violation of the Kentucky Civil Rights Actandthe U.S. Civil Rights Act. The Council claimed it discovered the Burlington Oaks Apartments were inaccessible topeople with disabilities in a number of its design elements. The apartment company denied any violation of the law. The commission’s investigation of the complaint found there was probable cause to believe discrimination had occurred and issued the probable cause notice to the complainant and respondent. The parties then agreed to conciliate the matter rather than continue litigation. The respondent agreed to pay $7,000 to the Lexington Fair Housing Council and pay $10,000 to the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights forattorneyfees and the cost of administrative process. The respondent also agreed to correct the design problems and place $25,000 in an account for that purpose, which will be managed by a third party and the complainant. The respondent will report to the commission for law compliance.

CEO/Executive Director Statement

Housing is a basic need for all humans and must be given fairly and equally without prejudice.  Abraham Maslow, a forefather of modern psychology who created the needs pyramid with shelter being an essential part of its base, stated: “It is too simple to say ‘man is basically good’ or ‘man is basically evil’. The correct way would be to say ‘man can become good (probably) and better and better under a hierarchy of better and better conditions.” At the Lexington Fair Housing Council, we strive to be part of those better conditions and hope to give a voice to those who need it.
