Statements
Mission Statement We will help in a time of need whether it is for food, clothing or other short term needs, while preserving dignity and pride.
Background Statement In 2005 while working part time in the Owsley County School I observed that children were hungry on Monday morning. We found out that these children have little on no food in their home on the weekend. They eat at school at noon and not again until Monday morning at the breakfast program. These kids are on free meals with the school. The Backback program help assure that children will have food over the weekends and when school is not in session.
Impact Statement

According to the 2010 census, Owsley County is the Poorest County in the USA. Many children in Owsley County go home on the weekends with little or no food from Friday at noon till Monday morning at 7:30 when they return to the school for breakfast. OCOC sends home food backpacks with meals that are easy for these children to access in prepared containers that can be eaten heated or non heated. These are forgotten children due to drugs, addiction, one parent being deceased, in prison, or both parents gone and the children living with grandparents that live on less than ($700) seven hundred a month.
A child with an empty belly can not learn, sit still or stay awake as opposed to children who have eaten. If you are hungry you will just stay in bed as long as you can. The food backpack program gives children hope, encouragement and the chance for a better future.

CEO/Executive Director Statement
As the founder and Director of OCOC I saw first hand the need many children experience. Children learn better when they're not hungry. The goal of the backpack food program is to give children the energy to learn and stay in school.

Board Chair Statement

When hearing about this problem in Owsley County I knew we had to step up and do what we could to keep these children productive and not continue to be lost children.
