Mission Statement To positively impact the lives of young women by providing a transformative experience that promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership, and individual talents.
Background Statement Distinguished Young Women was founded in Mobile, Alabama in 1958. The first national program had representatives from 18 states. Today, the national program spans the country with participants from all 50 states. It has provided life-changing experiences for more than 730,000 young  women and more than $100 million in cash scholarships has been awarded at the local, state, and national level.
At each level, whether local, state, or national, our organization believes the young woman chosen by a panel of judges is a representative chosen from a group of winners, not a winner from a group of participants.
Distinguished Young Women has established a unique system to evaluate participants in the categories of scholastics, interview, talent, fitness, and self-expression.
Distinguished Young Women encourages each participant to complete her college education, serve her community, and become a leader, thereby setting a good example for other young people. The Be Your Best Self (BYBS) program is our national outreach program, which encourages self-esteem, healthy lifestyles, and goal setting.
Distinguished Young Women is a nonprofit organization governed by a board of civic, business and professional leaders. Distinguished Young women embraces diversity by seeking volunteers and participants from all racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.

Impact Statement Accomplishments: 1) secured $10,000 in contributions, 2) increased the number of young women in our feeder program (Little Sisters) from 20-28, 3) 64% of participants earned scholarship money, 4) winner advanced to the top 10 in state competition for the 7th consecutive year.
Goals: 1) to raise $15,000+ for scholarships, 2) to encourage more minorities to participate, 3) to increase community awareness, 4) to continue to have a strong showing at the state level.
Needs Statement 1. contributions
2. more involvement in committees
3. community awareness
4. diversity in participants and committee members
5. community support
CEO/Executive Director Statement The Woodford County Distinguished Young Women program will be entering its 40th year of participation and has reached out to over 500 young women.
Our program fosters scholarship, leadership, and talent. The young women who participate in this program challenge themselves to embody these goals through exercising self-strength, self-composure, self-growth, and self-understanding.
Board Chair Statement The Distinguished Young Women program changes lives! I first became involved in our local program when my oldest daughter participated in 2000. From practicing interview skills, fitness routine, speaking on stage to an audience of people-she became a much more rounded young woman. Even though she didn't win the local competition I remained involved with the program for the last 15 years and have served as the chairperson for seven years. My youngest daughter also participated in the program in 2007 and had an equally rewarding experience.
The most pressing challenge we face each year is fund raising. We try to increase the amount of cash scholarship we give each year but because  Woodford County is a small county and the merchants and businesses get approached by other nonprofits often, sometimes it is difficult to do.
