Statements
Mission Statement The purpose of the Gateway Regional Arts Center is to promote, enhance and contribute to the educational, artistic and cultural lives of those living in Central and Eastern Kentucky.
The Council will serve as a supportive agency for artists and organizations contributing to the cultural climate of our community.
Background Statement THE GATEWAY REGIONAL ARTS CENTER

In 1991 the Montgomery County Parks and Recreation Commission formed an advisory group of eight individuals to address the need for arts and cultural activities in Montgomery County. This group presented the “Fall for the Arts!” festival in the fall of 1991, followed by another festival in the spring of 1992 to celebrate the Bicentennial of Mt. Sterling.
Understanding the need and desire for arts and cultural activities in our
community, this group then moved to form an autonomous organization called the Montgomery County Council for the Arts.  Since 1992 this group presented many
projects and programs for the community and surrounding area.
In 1996 the arts council had the opportunity to renovate a store front on Main Street in what is known as the “Main Cross Development”.  Renovations had been completed in the upstairs and on the facades of the buildings, leaving the interiors to be refurbished.  After a brief capital campaign and a year later, the interior was ready to house the “Gallery for the Arts”.  This gallery served as office, storage, Art Shop and Gallery for 10 years.
The Art Shop was initiated as a store where local and regional artists may sell their art work. One of the missions of the arts council is to showcase the art work of emerging local and regional artists as well as artists from surrounding states.
The Gallery displayed over 120 exhibits that ranged from traditional to “cutting edge” contemporary pieces. The Gallery received accolades from the Kentucky Arts Council and other arts organizations from across the state for the presenting a balance of traditional and thought provoking exhibits.
While the Gallery for the Arts has grown in reputation, it is but one of the many projects and programs that the Montgomery County Council for the Arts has been involved in developing.  Examples of annual programs include:  The Sterling Singers, The Noteables Community Youth Chorus, the Summer Playhouse and Summer Stock Theatre Camps, an Annual Regional Student Art Show, the Advent Musicale, Small Town America Festival, Gateway Camera Club, and many additional projects.
As the Arts Council grew in its breadth of programming so did its need for space and consolidation.  In 2002 the opportunity arose for the council to purchase the Historic First United Methodist Church on Main Street.  After much thought and investigation the Arts Council Board decided it was time to invest in the future of the arts in Montgomery County.
Through grants and fund raising efforts we were able to begin work in 2007. On September 19, 2009 we celebrated the Grand Opening of the Gateway Regional Arts Center with over 800 people attending the Sunday afternoon open house.
With this 12,000 square foot facility we now have the ability to consolidate programming under one roof.  Our new space includes a visual arts studio for classes, a resource library entitled the Wilson Room that is home to a gift of Contemporary Kenyan Art Collection donated by the Ruth Hunt Wood Foundation, a music rehearsal room, the Lewis Apperson White Performance Hall, a small performance café, an
additional classroom, and dressing rooms.  We are currently seeking funding for theatre lights in the performance hall and a commercial kitchen to finish our cafe area.
Now we are entering our third year in our Arts Center and the programming continues to expand for our community and region.  We truly are an Arts Center for everyone to enjoy!

Description The Annual Regional Art Show is held the last of April each year and reaches children in grades K-12 from all over the Gateway Area.  Students bring 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional artwork to display and compete for ribbons and prizes.  This program offers children an opportunity to exhibit their work, network with their peers, and to be recognized for their outstanding art.  During the most recent art show we had 500 pieces of art on display and 275 participants.

Description Each year we offer an up close and personal opportunity for an audience to listen to and meet professional musicians/vocalists during Salons.  The Salons are held in homes and offer experiences in:  Opera, Jazz, and Classical music.  Performances are followed by a reception also in the home where the audience can meet and talk with performers about their art form. Usually we offer 3-4 Salons per year.

Description
Each month we feature a different artist in the Arts Center Gallery.  The 1st Friday is our Opening Reception that includes a Gallery Talk by the artist currently on display.  This gives our audience an opportunity to ask questions of the artist and to gain some insight in how/why the artist creates a piece of work.
Through the Gallery we offer exhibits that include 2 dimensional, 3 dimensional, contemporary, traditional, and that are thought provoking.
It is a great opportunity for our community to see new and different art, meet the artist, and gain an understanding of the art on display.

Funding continues to a challenge to secure for our arts center in a rural community.  Sources that we have been able to rely on in the past are having to cut donations due to the impact of the economy on their own businesses.
Our organization continues to seek new revenue streams and ideas for raising the funds to maintain a sustained arts center.  We initiated a "Corporate Ask" this year in which we requested funding in the amount of $1200 from each business/corporation to be utilized for our operations and programming.  We are in need of additional corporate support to ensure that we remain and viable and vibrant regional arts center.
