Mission Statement To strengthen our communities through creating high quality, long lasting affordable homes.
Background Statement Housing Development Alliance believes safe, decent, affordable housing is a basic human right. As an equal opportunity housing provider, we strive to develop a variety of housing options including shelter for the homeless; transitional housing; affordable rental housing; repair and rehabilitation of existing homes; and affordable new homes for persons with low and very low incomes. As a community-based non-profit, we seek to bring together all sectors of the community to help eliminate substandard housing.

Incorporated a a non-profit organization in 1993, the Housing Development Alliance serves as lender, counselor, developer, and contractor. Since 1993, we have built well over 200 new homes, provided over 570 home repairs, developed 35 rental units, and invested over $15 million into the local economy.
Impact Statement In 2014 we built 20 new houses and invested $673,925 in the repairs of 62 homes. Our goal is to keep on track with that this year. Part of what made our success possible was the 532 volunteers we hosted in 2014 who worked 8,656 hours. We would also like to serve more people in Breathitt, Leslie, and Knott counties. As a step toward that, in 2015 we will host our 3rd Annual Repair Affair in Knott County, where the local community will help repair six homes in one day. Moving forward, we would like to sustain these numbers and work on building stronger relationships with our faithful volunteers and sponsors. We would also like to reach out to new groups of people and get better at getting the word out about the great work we do here in South Eastern Kentucky. Since our founding in 1993, we have built almost over 200 homes, made over 570 home repairs, and developed 35 rental units.

HDA works in Perry, Knott, Breathitt, and Leslie Counties, though HDA's main office is located in Hazard, Kentucky, Perry County. Officially settled in 1790 by Elijah Combs, Hazard is located on the North Fork of the Kentucky River approximately 115 miles southeast of Lexington, KY. Nestled on the heart of the Eastern Kentucky coalfields and part of the Appalachian Mountain chain, this town of 5,000 people is the seat of Perry County, as well as one of the largest towns in this area of the state.

Experience With over 13 years of nonprofit housing experience in Eastern Kentucky, Mr. McReynolds has guided the Housing Development Alliance since 1994. He has successfully administered over 5 million dollars of federal, regional, state and local funding. Under his leadership the Housing Development Alliance has completed eight HOME grants, a ten unit Single Resident Only project, and a ten unit transitional housing project.

Description The Housing Development Alliance accomplishes its mission by implementing affordable housing through several programs, including producing new homes, completing homeowner-occupied rehabs, and operating 10 units of permanent rental housing for formerly homeless individuals. Our target population earns 80% or below of the Area Median Income, as defined by HUD. On average, we have 200-250 active clients working toward homeownership or waiting for home repair.
