Mission Statement
To provide a carefully planned educational environment based on Dr. Maria Montessori's educational principles. To create peace through education ... one child at a time.
Background Statement
VMS was established in 1987 by Tony & Rene Guagliardo based on the influence of attending a Montessori program when Tony was preschool age. Since then, VMS has grown from a one ­room school house with one class of 12 students to a campus on 10 acres, offering three programs (Toddler, Primary & Elementary) for 90­-95 students annually.
 
Besides providing an excellent home-­like school environment for the children to explore and learn, the agricultural element allows for gardening, composting, recycling, animal care and more which characterizes one of the main Montessori ideals, the world is the classroom in which the child should be allowed to explore and internalize, naturally developing appreciation, resilience and concentration.

CEO/Executive Director Statement
VMS is a unique Montessori school due to its focus in developing community between all relationships involved in raising a child. The support provided by the staff and parents toward each other is remarkable. Many parents comment on this aspect frequently.
 
Another distinctive feature that serves the child long term is the assistance provided to parents by the staff with raising their children. Parents often share their reflections regarding VMS helping them to be better parents. VMS also offers free monthly parenting classes with a licensed therapist to enhance their support in this.
 
The 10 acres on which the school is situated also makes this an extraordinary Montessori school.  The playgrounds were created and developed with natural materials in mind, also making use of the trees and grass for an organic, creative area to play. It also makes possible more opportunities to observe and interact with nature.
Board Chair Statement
Working with the administration and staff of Versailles Montessori School has been painless because this is their vocation, and they are passionate about the impact they have on children and recognize these are the future citizens of the world. Dr. Maria Montessori recognized that to make productive, lasting change in the world it was best to start with the children. VMS staff subscribe to that view.
 
In the beginning, the greatest challenge was educating the community what Montessori was all about and that it had nothing to do with a monastery and monks. That was easily accomplished through open house visits. When it was time to build on our donated, ten acre campus, convincing the banks that we were worthy of a loan was the next challenge. That was overcome by a VMS parent who suggested we take on two notes, an initial loan secured by the property and a smaller loan ($128,000 over five years) to cover the difference, secured by parent guarantees. The bank agreed and approximately 35 families put their name on the line. VMS paid their guaranteed loan off in 3­1/2 years.
 
This wasn't the only time VMS parents answered the call for support. They also participated with painting the entire inside of the new building allowing the school to come in $13,000 under budget, something that is generally unheard of in the construction world.
 
Another challenge involved addressing state legislators to change childcare regulations which would make it possible to conduct authentic Montessori classes. To overcome that challenge several Montessori schools joined together, hired an attorney and went to Frankfort convincing state legislators to offer an exemption to nationally accredited Montessori programs from particular state regulations.
 
The most recent challenge has been trying to keep Montessori from being the best kept secret on child development. With the help of our national organizations we are working on local, state and national levels to make Montessori better understood and more widely known.
 
Versailles Montessori School is important because it is a long standing, working model of what early childhood education should look like. If the world is going to become a more peaceful environment with passionate, inquisitive and compassionate adult learners, we must begin with the children, and Versailles Montessori School is a wonderful place to start.

Situated between Frankfort and Lexington, VMS is located on 10 acres in Woodford County serving the towns of Versailles and Midway.  We also serve many families from Lexington and Frankfort, in addition to Lawrenceburg, Georgetown, Willisburg and Waddy.

GoalsHelpWhat is the organization aiming to accomplish? This is the organization's ultimate goal for intended impact.
Making Montessori education accessible as possible has always been a priority for VMS when considering its budget and tuition. VMS also strongly stands behind early education as the best time to invest in a child's education. VMS wants to support both philosophies by providing scholarships in the Toddler (18 mths - 3 yrs) and Primary (3 - ­6 yrs.) programs for underserved children. The ultimate goal would be to have two scholarships in the Toddler program and three in the Primary program.
 
By providing these scholarships, children that normally would not have a strong early start to their education and life would have the opportunity to get a foundation laid for a successful future. If these children, whom many term as at­-risk, were given a safe and healthy environment where they could freely explore and learn at the crucial early years of development, inner groundwork can be laid that would establish an increased love of learning, confidence, self­-direction and creativity.  We would be addressing the factors that make children at­-risk before they started or at the onset, creating a higher chance of eliminating the factors altogether.
 
Modern day studies on the benefits of early education are proving what Dr. Maria Montessori discovered at the turn of the 20th century. She developed a classroom environment along with an educational method centered on those discoveries. Providing children what a Montessori classroom offers during their early years has proven to set that child up for better success through the rest of their schooling and transition into adulthood. VMS has been a credible institution for 29 years in implementing Dr. Montessori's ideals and standards.
 
While providing an excellent instructional program on the school front is critical, at VMS we also recognize creating a partnership with the parents and helping to set up the home environment for success erases many of the factors that classifies a child 'at­-risk.' That's why VMS is excited to make monthly group parenting classes, as well as weekly individual family sessions, available as part of the scholarship program. A licensed therapist on our parent body will be working with us in reaching our overall holistic goals.
StrategiesHelpWhat are the organization's strategies for its stated long-term goals?
VMS modified the tuition policy for the 2016 -­ 2017 year, diverting reservation funds to the VMS Annual Scholarship Fund. By doing this, we created the first scholarship opportunity for the 2016­ - 2017 school year. To meet our goal of offering five scholarships in the next three to five years additional funding is still needed.
 
VMS has also recently created Fundraising Director position to dedicate efforts in raising money for the general fundraising program, as well as a specific focus in developing the VMS Annual Scholarship Fund. Having a committed director addresses the aspect of the time and effort involved in developing a new program.
 
The Fundraising Director will initially lay groundwork with community programs currently available to initiate interest and attention to VMS and the scholarship program, such as BGCF and its Good Giving network. Additionally, the director is working on developing new and established contacts toward a stronger philanthropic relationship. VMS is also expanding its advertising and mailing dollars to reach a wider audience in Woodford and its surrounding counties.
 
VMS also created a Scholarship Committee. It will not be comprised of anyone from the parent body. There are already three members, an alumni parent, an alumni student and a community supporter of VMS for 10 years.
CapabilitiesHelpWhat are the organization’s capabilities for doing this? What resources, capacities, and connections support its progress towards long-term goals?
The capacity for success with the scholarship program is substantial. One of the main assets to the program is the administrator himself. Tony Guagliardo had a vision 30 years ago in starting a Montessori school in Woodford County. As the school goes into its 29th year, it's clear that he's dedicated to serving the Bluegrass Region with quality Montessori education.
 
Not only has VMS become a high standard of Montessori education in the region, but the community, created by the staff and its families, are exemplary in supporting the school and one another. This is noted in fundraising events, as well as when there's catastrophes in people's lives. They rally together to accomplish the needed goal.
 
Tony also created a position for a Fundraising Director to focus specifically on generating interest and raising money for the school and the scholarship fund. So far, fundraising dollars have increased 55% from last year's earnings.
 
The business community has been very supportive through the years, too. Businesses in the Bluegrass area have supported with monetary and in-­kind donations for our annual fundraising events. We are confident in their support to generate funds for the VMS Annual Scholarship Fund.
IndicatorsHelpHow will the organization know if it is making progress? What are the key qualitative and quantitative indicators against which the organization assesses its progress toward its intended impact?
VMS will know if progress is being made based on the money raised. We have a certain goal of how much is needed to support a child in both the toddler (18 mths­ - 3 years) and primary (3­ - 6 years) programs, $5,000/year/child. Through record keeping already in place, it will be easy to assess progress.
 
Assessments and reports will be made on the child receiving the scholarship benefit based on physical, cognitive and communication skills at the onset of enrollment, mid­-year and at the end of the school year. These reports will generate information on the progress being made within the program itself and for the child, not just focusing on the financial support needed to make this happen. With this information, evaluations and specific plans for the program and the child can be improved upon and targets can be readdressed, if needed.
ProgressHelpWhat has and hasn’t been accomplished so far?
In reaching this long­-term goal for the scholarship fund to be used, there have been several accomplishments already. There are three members to the VMS Scholarship Fund committee, an alumni parent, an alumni student and a supportive local business owner.
 
This committee developed the criteria for the scholarship application, will review those applications and will make the final decision of who will be the recipient(s) of the scholarship fund.
 
Another accomplishment is the results of talking to one of the parents in our VMS family who is a financial consultant. She is credited with making the recommendation to redirect how certain fees are being used in order to build revenue in the Annual Scholarship Fund. By doing this, she made it possible to move up our goal for finding a recipient to the 2016 - ­2017 school year.
 
Lastly, as mentioned prior, VMS has a full time fundraising director for the school. Advertising and communication materials are being developed to generate interest in the school and its efforts to reach out to children in need with this scholarship.
 
This is the first year to really focus efforts on the scholarship, so much is yet to be learned.  However, the biggest obstacle presenting itself is raising the funding needed to support the scholarship program. Creative ideas are continuing to be offered in order to generate the funding needed for the program, but the cold calling and building of relationships is potentially the hardest obstacle to get over.

Experience
Tony has a Bachelor of General Studies from the University of Kentucky and his Primary Level (ages 3-6 years) Montessori training from the International Montessori Center in Perugia, Italy.  In July 1987, along with his wife, they opened the first Montessori program in Versailles, Kentucky, Montessori's House of the Children.
 
In May 1994, they incorporated as a 501C3, non-profit, and opened Versailles Montessori School.  Tony has taught in the classroom for seven years, and been the head of school since 1987. 
 
In being the CEO and principal, he has 28 years of creating and meeting a budget, managing staff, resolving conflicts, and human resource responsibilities.  He has mastered child development and working with children in a positive and productive manner that helps them reach their fullest potential.

Montessori is a method of education developed by Dr. Maria Montessori.  It was established more than 100 years ago and is in more schools worldwide than any other.
 
With the Montessori method, learning is based on the fact that physical exploration and cognition are linked.  Instead of sitting at desks learning from white boards and worksheets, children learn through their own experiences with materials specifically prepared for that purpose.
 
Another key aspect of the Montessori method is that working and learning is matched to the social development of the child.  Teachers pay attention to the children as much as the children pay attention to the teacher.
 
Dr. Montessori's educational philosophy is revolutionary.  She crossed new boundaries and gave the world a scientific method, practical and tested, for bringing forth the very best in young human beings.
