Statements
Mission Statement The Lexington Home Ownership Commission, an affiliate agency of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Housing Authority, provides safe and desirable affordable housing to low and moderate income individuals and families while partnering with community agencies to promote self-sufficiency and a higher quality of life for our residents.
Background Statement The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Housing Authority was established in 1934 to provide affordable housing to low and moderate income individuals and families in the Lexington area. The Authority's first 286 public housing units opened in 1937 at the former Bluegrass-Aspendale development. Today, the Authority serves more than 5,800 families through its public housing and Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher programs. The Lexington Home Ownership Commission was created in 1995 as a non-profit subsidiary of the Authority. The Commission was established both to provide affordable home ownership opportunities for low and moderate income families and to fund services that increase the self-sufficiency and quality of life of Authority residents.
Impact Statement The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Housing Authority currently provides affordable housing opportunities to more than 3,800 low and moderate income families in the Lexington area. In recent years, the Authority received two federal HOPE VI grants totaling $39 million to revitalize the Charlotte Court and Bluegrass-Aspendale public housing developments, transforming these aging complexes into vibrant, mixed-income neighborhoods. In 2011, the Authority became one of approximately thirty public housing authorities in the nation permitted to test alternative public housing and Section 8 strategies when it was accepted into the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Moving to Work (MTW) Demonstration Program. In 2012, the Lexington Home Ownership Commission, a non-profit affiliate of the Authority, will seek funding to provide case management and health care services to the 317 elderly and near-elderly, low-income families who live in Ballard Place and Connie Griffith Towers in downtown Lexington.
