Mission Statement The mission of Daniel Boone Rails to Trails is to promote healthy living through outdoor recreation - walking, hiking, bicycling - that is safe and accessible to everyone in our community.
Background Statement Daniel Boone Rails to Trails was incorporated about 20 years ago for the purpose of developing a biking and walking trail on the site of an abandoned railroad bed.  The plan was to make the Rowan County portion connect to a trail that would extend from Lexington to Ashland.  Over the years, those volunteers working toward this goal were met with resistance from landowners who refused to give access to sections on their private property. In the past three years, new volunteers have worked with the City Manager to identify a route for a multi-purpose path that is on city-owned and university-owned property.  The Morehead City Council, the Morehead Tourism Commission, Morehead NewCities, and the Downtown New Vision Committee have all endorsed this new approach.  At the same time, the University is developing plans for a more bicycle and pedestrian-friendly campus.  Attitudes are positive, and the timing is right to develop a strategic plan supported by a budget.
Impact Statement Accomplishments - Securing pro bono work from Carman, a landscape architectural and civil engineering firm in Lexington developing a plan for improving pedestrian and bicycling access on the campus of Morehead State University   Securing $5,000 from the City Council of Morehead toward the projectSecuring a commitment from Morehead Tourism to provide signage for the proposed trailBeing recognized as an anchor project of Morehead's Downtown Vision PlanDetermining end points for phase 1 of the Triplett Valley Trail Goals -To secure permission of cinema owners to locate trailhead between cinema and creekTo secure permission from James Booth to install culvert to cross creek branch behind oil changeTo identify legitimate expenditures for the City’s budgeted contribution
Needs Statement 1. Funds to purchase a culvert to cross a small branch flowing into Triplett Creek preparation of the area where the culvert will be placedgridwork to serve as the walking/biking surface(The estimate from Carman comes to $836,854, far beyond what we expected and beyond what we believe to be needed.)2. Volunteer labor to assist with trail building3. Donations of plants and other landscaping along the trail
CEO/Executive Director Statement Our organization does not have a CEO/Executive Director.
Board Chair Statement Challenges in the past have been a lack of understanding of the benefits of outdoor activity and resistance among property owners.  With time and education, concern for safe and accessible opportunities to exercise outdoors has overcome indifference.  But a real breakthrough has been leadership changes in the past few years.  The support from the city council and administration, the university, and our regional medical center have come together as people catch the vision of a safe walking, bicycling, and running trail. I am a father of three children who attend our public schools and participate in organized sports, and I wish they could ride their bikes to school.  I am a runner, and I wish I had an option other than our city streets.  Good friends who are avid cyclists travel out of state to enjoy their favorite recreation, and they wish they could stay close to home.  It is the passion of these friends and other who have joined our campaign that keeps me dedicated to seeing the development of the Triplett Valley Trail.
Geographic Areas Served

Phase 1 of the Triplett Valley Trail will extend from a lot behind Morehead Cinema through the City Park into downtown Morehead and out old U.S. 60 to Rodburn Hollow Park.  Phase 2 will involve adding a bridge over Triplett Creek to create a loop in the trail between the City Park and the cinema.
