Mission Statement The mission of the Hand Up Group is to give individuals and families in our community a hand up during difficult times. Our primary focus lies in operating a transitional living house that can house up to 4 unique families at a time. Families who have found themselves homeless due to eviction, loss of a job, a house burning down, etc. can stay with us free of charge for up to 3 months until they are financially stable and can move on to the next step in their lives. We provide counseling, food assistance, money management and goal management assistance/teaching, and a friendly, stable, safe place to lay their heads each night. We work with people to help them find jobs, find apartments, find childcare or any other needs. We are simply trying to fill in the gap in our community where people who have no place to go can find temporary relief.
Background Statement We started the Hand Up Group in August of 2011. We recognized a need for a transitional living facility in our community because when individuals or families would find themselves homeless, they were put on a bus to Lexington or Louisville; then when they arrived and found that the shelters and other homeless facilities were full, they would put them right back on a bus and send them back to Boyle County with no place to go. We decided it was long past time to have an answer for those people!
Impact Statement
In 2012 we have:
1. Gotten 10 families into apartments/homes
2. Helped 16 families find shelter and food and support in our transitional house
3. Found 12 individuals jobs within two weeks
Needs Statement
We need:
  1. Financial support to maintain the upkeep (utilities, maintenance, etc.) of our transitional home
2. Financial support to continue helping residents of our transitional home buy clothes for work, do laundry, put gas in their cars (if they have them)
Geographic Areas Served
We are located in and serve residents of Boyle County/Danville, KY.

Experience Working with individuals and families who have found themselves with no place to go, no place to rest, no place to feel safe has been quite a challenge, quite humbling, quite exciting, and quite rewarding. I am glad that we have been able to meet an incredibly difficult need in our community by opening a transitional living house. We've gotten to watch people come in homeless, jobless, and hopeless, and then leave with a steady job and income, an apartment or home to call their own, and with optimism and hope. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve!

Experience I love working with this population. I have worked in similar job settings with the same population, but now I get to participate first hand in giving people tangible hope: a place to call home while they transition from homelessness to stability and hopefulness!

Description We are consistently moving individuals and families in and out of our transitional house. We are currently working on finding a "house manager" to also live in the house or be there frequently so that the co-Directors (who are also directors of another more time consuming non-profit) can better manage their time between the transitional house and their other obligations.
