Mission Statement
Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet, Inc is dedicated to providing children in need in our schools with new, high quality footwear.  We believe that not having basic personal items can distract a child from performing at his/her best in school.  Therefore, we provide these shoes to them to help build self-esteem and hopefully to alleviate teasing and bullying by their classmates.
Background Statement
Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet Inc. was founded in 2009 by Jerry Baird of Morganfield, Kentucky, for the sole purpose of providing new athletic shoes to the needy children in schools. The program is thriving in more than a dozen counties in western Kentucky.  Boyle County was the first county in central Kentucky to offer this program.
Impact Statement
We began serving the youth of Boyle County, Kentucky in 2013. We were able to provide over 500 pairs of shoes and socks to children in Boyle County last year. Happy Feet is charged an average of $30.00 a pair for these new, name-brand athletic shoes.  Therefore, we need to raise around $15,000.00 by May 2018 to accomplish our goal. Danville/Boyle County Happy Feet is it's own entity and we do not receive any funds from the corporation.
Needs Statement
1.  We have a committee of 11 people.  We need more volunteers that are dedicated in helping us raise funds.
2.  500 children in need of shoes now.
3.  Shoe Carnival provides these shoes to Happy Feet at an average of $30.00 per pair.
4.  Around $15,000.00 is needed by May 2017 to accomplish this goal and get the children measured before school is let out for the summer.
5.  Administrative expenses are kept to a minimum.  No salaries are taken.  All volunteer services.
CEO/Executive Director Statement
Our program only offers new shoes, not donated shoes.  After talking with all the Family Resource Directors and Youth Services Directors at all the schools in Danville and Boyle County, the consensus was that they get clothes donated but not shoes, especially as the children get older.  They are all very excited about our program.
Board Chair Statement
Our program is offered to schools in our county:  Danville City Schools (5), Boyle County Schools (5), Ky School for the Deaf (one school with around 110 children enrolled), and Head Start.
Our biggest challenge is raising the funds needed to provide these shoes.  As we all know, our economy is still recovering and a lot of folks live from paycheck to paycheck and just don't see how they can donate to any cause, even though we are all about children.  We have had several fundraisers, including a 5k color run.
I retired after 40 years in the banking/financial area.  I worked in the Private Wealth Management Area (Trust) of Farmers National Bank in Danville, Ky.  I was a Vice President and Administrator having my own portfolio of accounts to manage.  My cousin, Jerry Baird, asked me to start this program in Boyle County and after thinking about it, I feel it is a very good cause. I had no idea how large the need is in Boyle County. Our program covers head start through high school. I've told all of our committee members, if we don't reach our goal each year we will still put shoes on as many children as possible!

Impact Questions
GoalsHelpWhat is the organization aiming to accomplish? This is the organization's ultimate goal for intended impact.
The ultimate goal of Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet, Inc. is to provide needy children in our local schools with quality athletic shoes.  We want to become known in our community and county as the organization for Family Resource Center Directors and Youth Services Directors in our schools to turn to when there is a need for shoes.  We intend to continue this program each year and we want to build relationships with the FRCD's and YSD's so they will know they have a resource to contact each year.  We know there will always be a need for our program in our county, but we hope that by providing new shoes, the children will be able to concentrate on learning instead of worrying about how they look to their peers. If an emergency arises, such as a house fire, flood, tornado, etc., we will be able to provide the children with shoes at that time for free.  If needed, we will provide dress shoes to a high school senior for graduation.

CEO Comments
The numbers above are for all counties involved in this program.  Our financial need is around $15,000.  This would provide 500 pairs of shoes and administrative expenses for advertising and supplies.  Our main challenge in raising funds is having limited history to share with potential donors.  Some businesses and individuals are reluctant to give to a program that has not proved itself.  Therefore, we need help from other sources such as foundations like Blue Grass Community Foundation.
