Mission Statement To build a training and support center for professionals and person's with dyslexia and their families. This will fill the demand for trained persons in multi-sensory structured language tutoring which is based on the Orton-Gillinham method, and thus provides the specially designed instruction required to remediate language based differences as found with dyslexia. To meet the need for psycho educational evaluators to be trained in the detection of dyslexia and thus be able to make recommendations for remediation. To create a place for tutoring, evaluation, a resource room with developmentally appropriate books, technology for all ages of dyslexics, tutoring materials, and info on dyslexia. Aim: Accurate, and preferably early, detection and proper tutoring provides a way for students to overcome educational obstacles. It provides academic therapy allowing students' sea of strengths to be utilized and thus be everything God intends them to be, which in turn prevents anxiety, discouragement and failure.
Background Statement Over 9 years ago, CKyDSS, Central Kentucky Dyslexia Support Services, an informal group of moms of children with dyslexia was formed because no resources could be found for their children. The public and educators didn't have an accurate understanding. Meetings to share resources, listen to relevant speakers, dissemination of material, etc. We made some headway. calls kept coming in. But a big problem surfaced. There was nowhere local to refer families affected with Dyslexia for help. Therefore, The Bluegrass Dyslexia Center was founded on the determination to fill the huge void of the ground resources and answers for children with dyslexia and their families in the Central Kentucky area. The need for multi sensory structured language program tutors (Orton-Gillingham), being the reading tutoring for children with dyslexia that works, along with education in diagnostic testing of dyslexia, and parent support for guidance and resources that go beyond only being available on your computer screen, is hugely unmet. We are fulfilling the need of the ground/real-live trained persons here to help. Based upon research, approximately 15-20% of population suffers from a reading difficulty. At least 15% are dyslexic to varring degrees. At least 10%are severe enough to need remediation in order to learn to read. Apply that to the Fayette Co. School population alone. Out of 4000 dyslexic students, only a handful are currently receiving appropriate help for reading.
Impact Statement The Bluegrass Dyslexia Center became a non profit October 2014. We have a cooperative parent based after school tutoring program for children with dyslexia, called 1*2*1 Tutoring of the Bluegrass. This program is a division of The Bluegrass Dyslexia Center. In the program parents are trained how to train each other's children. The tutoring is a specialized multi-sensory approach particularly helpful for children with dyslexia. One highlight of the evening is a parent support group, which is going on while the students are in class working on auditory discrimination. In 2015 four teachers were trained in Orton-Gillingham by Martha Chiodi, certified instructor (International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council-IMSLEC) who traveled here from Cincinnati for 4 weeks. They ar snow tutoring students. Literature to raise awareness of dyslexia are handed out on every occasion possible by our board, for example: at public schools, libraries, pediatrician offices, etc. Our goals for 2016 areto raise 250,000.00 in a capital and awareness campaign. To add another after school program at another location, to have a office location, resource room and tutoring permanent space and to have the funding to train 10 more tutors in the multi sensory structures language program, and to train 3 psychologists or psychologist assistant at the 1 week June 2016 training in diagnostic evaluations at The Shelton School in Dallas, TX.
