Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer
Donations can be made by mailing checks to our listed address. In-kind opportunities are available from time to time. We often need to replace items such as crayons, sidewalk chalk, educational coloring books, and preschool workbooks.
Volunteers are assigned to individual families in order to establish a trusting relationship. Volunteers work with children to strengthen their Pre-K skills, like recognizing colors, shapes, numbers, and letters. Children are taught how to correctly hold and control a pencil, crayon, and paint brush.
Volunteers and families meet once a week for a minimum of 30 minutes at The Gladys Project building. Volunteers are required to pass the KSP background check before meeting with a family. They must also complete an application and volunteer training. Please contact The Gladys Project for more information.

Mission Statement The mission of the Gladys Project is to close the learning gap for children entering school by removing educational barriers from infancy through preschool/kindergarten.
Background Statement
The Gladys Project was first conceived after its founder, Elaine Wilson-Reddy, volunteered for Reading Camp at a local church. The camp was a week long program for rising second, third, and fourth graders from the local schools. These children were identified by their teachers as needing more help with their reading skills.
A reading camper would sit with an adult and read aloud from a book chosen by the camper. Elaine was struck by the children who apologized for not being strong readers. As someone who had always loved reading, it was important for Elaine to find out why and how a second, third, or fourth grader could not read.
Over 50% of kindergartners begin school without the skills needed in order to be successful in school. These students are the ones who most likely would either dropout before graduation or graduate without critical life skills. Children who did not qualify for public preschool or whose families could not afford private preschool were the ones who needed help.
Gladys Project volunteers work with children from those families to ensure they have a chance at school success. The volunteer helps teach skills like identifying colors, letters, numbers, etc. The children's parents also participate. They partner with the volunteer during the sessions and are expected to reinforce each lesson at home.
The children are assessed using ASQ-3 when they being the program. This assessment measures Communication, Gross Motor, Fine Motor, Problem Solving, and Personal-Social skill development. Volunteers customize lessons to strengthen weaknesses and reinforce areas of strength. Each child is assessed after six months to track their progress.
The ultimate goal is for each child to begin kindergarten with the skills required for success.
Impact Statement
The Gladys Project opened its doors February 1, 2016 with very modest goals: Grow slowly and carefully with three to five family participants matched with trained volunteers, which we met.
1. Identify, and develop relationships with, local and regional funding partners that share our vision of the importance of kindergarten readiness. We currently have a strong partnership with Heart of Kentucky United Way and several churches. This is an on-going process.
2. Identify, and develop relationships with, other community organizations that support early childhood education. We partner with the local school districts (Danville Independent and Boyle County) preschool programs, the Boyle County Health Department, Family Services, the Boyle County CECC, and the Boyle County Extension Agency. This, too, is a goal in progress.
3. For the 2017 fiscal year, we would to add 10 additional families and volunteers, reach out to the refugee families who have recently relocated to Danville, potentially add tutoring services for grades 1-3,and have our first fund raiser.
Needs Statement Our most critical need is to identify families who need our services. These families' children will not qualify for public preschool nor will they afford private preschool. We would like to conduct four mailings a year to reach these families. The mailing would have information about the importance of kindergarten readiness and how The Gladys Project can help children who are not in preschool.

CEO Comments
As a new organization, we are still trying to find board members who are a good fit. Many well-qualified community members are already committed to other established organizations. We have made a concerted effort to bring on board members who have not served on previous boards. This has been met with moderate success.
Our goal is to have an active, diverse board made up of seven community members. This is an on-going process.

The primary focus of The Gladys Project is kindergarten readiness. Over 50% of children in Boyle County begin school without the required skills to be successful. Those students either don't qualify for public preschool or their families cannot afford private preschool.
We provide one-on-one sessions with the primary adult caregiver and child. A trained, vetted volunteer works with the child and models skills to be used through the week when the family is at home. They meet once a week at The Gladys Project for a minimum of 30 minutes. Caregivers are asked to spend at least 10 minutes a day reinforcing the skills modeled during the session.
The Gladys Project used ASQ-3 to assess each child's development skills when they first begin with us and every six months after in order to track their progress, strengths and weaknesses.
