A Chance to Dance is always looking for committed volunteers to work with our students on a weekly basis. As a volunteer you would attend classes each week as well as other activities and performances that take place throughout the year. As a program we try to pair each of our students with a class assistant! While being a class assistant is a major time commitment it is also very rewarding! Being a dancer isn't required however, be ready to dance!

Mission Statement Our goal is to have a positive impact on students with special needs by teaching them dance skills in an environment that allows them to improve their physical and communicative capabilities. In addition, we strive to foster positive interactions between people and students with special needs to create an understanding. Our ultimate goal is to expand our program across the state of Kentucky and to continue to have a positive impact on students with special needs by giving them "A Chance to Dance."
Background Statement A Chance to Dance was founded in 2013 and is a non-profit organization that offers dance classes free of charge to children of all ages with various special needs. A Chance to Dance was founded on the platform that our student's families would not have to pay for classes or costumes. We did not want expenses to keep anyone from participating in our program. In addition to the medical bills, child care and therapies that our families have to pay for for their children we did not want A Chance to Dance to be added as another expense. Our program is called A Chance to Dance because we wanted to give every student "a chance to dance" and did not want children's mental or physical needs to keep them from participating in dance. We wanted these students to feel just like any other student and have the same opportunity to participate in dance.
Impact Statement This year our program was able to offer dance classes to twenty-five students free of charge! We were able to supply each of our students with dance costumes and shoes that they used during class and for their performances. During these weekly classes, we were able to teach students dance steps in various genres while helping students improve their social and communication skills. In addition, we were able to take our students to a dance competition were they competed with a dance routine they worked hard to learn! As we continue to grow and receive more community support we hope to provide these experiences to more students across the state of Kentucky.
Needs Statement Currently our program's most pressing need is monetary donations. We offer our program free of charge to students so that expenses don't keep anyone from being able to participate. Most of our students families have various medical and therapy bills they have to pay and we did not want our program to be an extra expense. With this, we have to provide dance shoes and costumes for the students as well as studio costs, performance costs, insurance costs, website costs, etc.
CEO/Executive Director Statement Miss Jenna is the founder and director of A Chance to Dance and has the privilege of working with the students on a weekly basis every Sunday, teaching them dance and how to interact with others. Miss Jenna grew up in the dance world dancing since the age of three and was part of a Performing Arts Company as well as school and other dance teams. She has always had a passion for helping others as well as dance and was inspired to combine the two passions and create A Chance to Dance when she was a Junior in High School. Miss Jenna started the program with only four students but when she went to college at the University of Kentucky she took her dance program with her to Lexington and now has twenty-five students! While she leads the class and teaches the students every week, the students seem to teach her something every week too. Through her program she has learned that every student is unique and learns in a different way. This has taught her how to accommodate to each students needs’ and how to differentiate instruction for each individual student. Her program has also given her the passion to break stereotypes. She has experienced firsthand working with amazing, loving, sweet children and young adults that are oftentimes stereotyped and misunderstood. Through her program she tries to break these stereotypes by creating a positive environment for her volunteers to interact with the students and through the various performances they do that help show people what the students are capable of doing. Furthermore, Jenna says that "our students have shown me that they are just like any other person and are capable of accomplishing anything regardless of their disability. Some of our students might need a little extra help or guidance but I have watched their determination and resilience help them achieve anything they set their mind to. A Chance to Dance is truly a blessing to me and working with each of the students has been the most rewarding experience!"
