At BIAK - Lexington Chapter  we are committed to serving those affected by brain injury though advocacy, education, prevention, outreach, service and support.  BIAK - LEX is a chapter of our state organization.  BIAK - LEX  is currently focused on providing education, prevention, outreach, and support in the Lexington bluegrass area of KY.   BIAK seeks to share its philosophy, experience and skills with survivors, family members, students, caregivers, administrators, health professionals, legislators, the lay community and all those who desire to make a difference in the life of individuals with brain injuries and their families.

The Brain Injury Alliance of Kentucky (BIAK), a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency, began as an outgrowth of a Lexington area support group in the early 1980s. Family members, medical staff and others felt the need to expand the services and support to reach statewide. The state office was moved to Louisville and incorporated in 1986. BIAK seeks to share its philosophy, experience and skills with survivors, family members, students, caregivers, administrators, health professionals, legislators, the lay community and all those who desire to make a difference in the life of individuals with brain injuries and their families.  The Lexington Chapter was started in 2014 to enable the local community to be more actively involved in this organization.

Impact Statement
2018 Accomplishments:

1.   We continue to work on development of our brain injury support group specifically for individuals who have survived significant brain injury and who are functioning well in society, yet may continue with subtle concerns.  These persons have chosen to meet together to share stories, support, strategies, and frustrations.

2.  We held one helmet giveaway during the year, providing a total of 100  bicycle helmets  for children.  These helmets are fit to each child by individuals who have been trained in appropriate sizing. This events occurred at Home Depot Safety Day.  Board Members also assisted with another helmet giveaway in Georgetown KY.

3.  Our members organized and supported the Brain Injury Mask display during brain injury awareness month at Fayette Mall.  This was accomplished through collaborative efforts with the KY Department of Aging and Independent Living, Unmasking Brain Injury Project.

4. Increased community awareness by participating in BGCF Goodgiving Campaign, and placed an advertisement and article in TOPS Magazine.

5.  Maintain brain injury educational materials at UK Medical Center Trauma ICU units.

2019 Goals:

1.  Strengthen newly formed support group with adding members and develop routine meeting time/space.

2.  Enhance support for brain injury survivors by facilitating BIAK-LEX initial Survivor Dinner.  Currently planned for Spring 2020.

3.  Improve awareness of brain injury in the Bluegrass Area by conducting events for helmet giveaways, and brain injury prevention and support information.

CEO Comments BIAK-LEX is a Chapter of the state organization Brain Injury Alliance of KY (BIAK).  The BIAK-LEX chapter functions autonomously in our region with our own Board and budget.  We have representation and voting authority on the state BIAK Board and the state BIAK Executive Board.  There are staff who work for the state office who we have access to for information but largely rely on local BIAK-LEX Board members for our activities and needs.  The description of the Chapter Boards and the relationship to the state Board is housed in the state BIAK Bylaws.
Description The 2018 BIAK-LEX Symposium is an all day educational event for brain injury survivors, family members and health care providers in the field of brain injury.  Current information, treatment and strategies for implementation will be provided.
