Mission Statement

Gan Shalom is an Early Childhood Program committed to a safe, supportive environment for learning and development. The program provides a high quality educational structure that emphasizes Jewish values and celebrations. Within this framework, instruction is child centered, developmentally appropriate, and balanced with a variety of creative and recreational activities.

Background Statement

Gan Shalom was started in 2000 by a few parents (including Judy Levey and Zigmund Rivkin-Fish) who wanted a high quality preschool that would serve the needs of working parents both in the Jewish community and the larger Lexington community. Gan Shalom has been committed to diversity from its very inception, and this diversity is reflected in both the children and the teachers.

Gan Shalom is Hebrew for “Garden of Peace”. In Hebrew, gan refers to gan yeladim (kindergarten or preschool), so it is more correctly translated as the Shalom Preschool (or Preschool of Peace).

We owe the continual existence (and growth) of Gan Shalom to the dedicated work of teachers, parent volunteers, and various donations from parents as well as members of the synagogue community with which we are affiliated, and a generous endowment from Sara and Erle Levy who not only made Gan Shalom possible, but also ensured that we could grow.

Impact Statement

Ø Challenge children to ask questions and become lifelong learners through play and exposure to materials and equipment;

Ø Develop the home-school relationship so that faculty and parents/guardians are co-teachers and co-learners;

Ø Help children become responsible people who are self-controlled and considerate of others; and

Ø Respond to individual differences among children in order to address particular needs.

Needs Statement
  • Continue to increase teacher salaries
  • Pay a greater percentage of employee health benefits
  • Attend annual NAEYC Conference (Association for the Education of Young Children)
  • Increase scholarship fund
  • Provide on-going parental support through educational speaker opportunities
CEO/Executive Director Statement

Gan Shalom serves children of all backgrounds and faiths.  We celebrate Jewish holidays and customs, while also welcoming family diversity.  We emphasize the concepts of Tzedakah (charity) and being a Mensch (good person).  At Gan Shalom,  students learn that people have different beliefs  and we embrace everyone's uniqueness.

Board Chair Statement I have been involved with Gan Shalom for many years.  As a retired elementary school teacher, I feel strongly about the importance of early childhood education.  At Gan Shalom, the teachers provide a well-rounded, developmentally appropriate learning environment for the students, while also addressing the needs of each  individual child. It's heart-warming to watch the students as they play and learn together, while building relationships they often continue past their preschool years.

Impact Questions
GoalsHelpWhat is the organization aiming to accomplish? This is the organization's ultimate goal for intended impact. Currently, we have a 5-STAR rating through the All STARS of Kentucky Program.  Although this is the highest star available, we will be working closely with our "Quality Coach" to develop and maintain our 5-STAR rating. We will continue to educate our staff in developmental screenings and curriculum development.
StrategiesHelpWhat are the organization's strategies for its stated long-term goals? Currently, our staff attends the  NAEYC Conference (National Association for the Education of Young Children) every 2-3 years.  With additional financial support, we will be able to attend the NAEYC Conference each year, providing our staff with the most current developments in early childhood screenings and  assessments, which help to identify special needs and individual learning styles. While at the conference, teachers will take classes specific to the needs of their students.
CapabilitiesHelpWhat are the organization’s capabilities for doing this? What resources, capacities, and connections support its progress towards long-term goals? Last year we were awarded the 5-Star Quality rating through the Kentucky All STARS Program.  Upon this accomplishment, we were awarded materials (the BRIGANCE and 'Creative Curriculum') to screen and assess our students.  At the NAEYC Conference, teachers will be trained on how to administer both of these tools.
IndicatorsHelpHow will the organization know if it is making progress? What are the key qualitative and quantitative indicators against which the organization assesses its progress toward its intended impact? By increasing the effectiveness of our screenings and assessments, teachers will be more knowledgeable and confident in suggesting referrals to occupational, physical and speech therapists, as needed.
ProgressHelpWhat has and hasn’t been accomplished so far? Currently, we assess all children and we will begin to screen all incoming children. As these are new tools to us, we look forward to implementing them for the educational and developmental success of each student.

CEO Comments Ohavay Zion Synagogue and Gan Shalom Preschool are taking steps to ensure the safety of our congregants, children and staff. For several years, we have had fobs for parents to gain access to the preschool.  Recently, we added security film to all of the outdoor windows and doors and we replaced all classroom door locks.  Currently, we are replacing the front door to the main entrance of the building and adding locks to common areas.  We are also investigating different audio-visual intercom systems.
Description At Gan Shalom, we provide early childhood education for approximately 50 children, ages 1 through Pre-K following the Fayette County calendar year.  We have 5 classrooms with a low child:teacher ratio.
