Mission Statement
Our mission is to educate, entertain and inspire new audiences by sharing the art of dance through our contemporary dance company and through our outreach program, serving children with special needs.

Our vision is to grow the concept of inclusion in the local arts community and to expand/diversify the professional dance performance offerings in Lexington. Our ultimate goal is to ignite an ongoing interest and a desire for continued participation in dance or other creative/performing arts and to encourage a more arts-enriched lifestyle.
 
Our Inclusive Dance Outreach provides dance training for children with Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder and other specific needs. By blending classical ballet, jazz and contemporary movements our program is an inclusive and engaging way for participants to reap the many benefits the art of dance has to offer in the comfort and convenience of their own school. Dance increases flexibility, agility, coordination and spatial awareness and at the same time helps to develop expressive, musical, motor and auditory skills.
We utilize live interactive music accompaniment to further help develop sense of rhythm, patterns, recognition of musical cues and to explore the relationship between music, expression and emotions. We also partner with Physical Therapists and PT students from the University of Kentucky to enhance the safety aspect of our programming and to suggest movement modifications as needed.
 
Our Contemporary Dance Company awards contracts and apprenticeships to talented young dancers in our community, offering them valuable work experience and insight into the career of a professional dancer.
 
Each season, the two programs of our organization synchronize for an exciting performance event at the Lyric Theatre. Our contemporary dance performances include original music compositions performed live, a wide variety of aerial and circus artists and our Inclusive Dance outreach participants are invited to perform! 
Background Statement

Allegro Dance Project was founded in 2013 by Artistic Director, Jeana Klevene. After completing all necessary steps to obtain 501(c)(3) non-profit status, we launched our first special needs dance outreach program in the fall of 2014. In our first season, we completed four, 5-6 week Inclusive Dance Outreach programs and two Adaptive Dance and Aerial Arts workshops. Our contemporary dance company employed ten paid dancers, four apprentice dancers, four musicians and an aerialist for our performances of Let Me Show You the Ropes at the Lyric Theatre.

 
In our second season, we completed five Adaptive Dance and Aerial Arts Workshops, eleven Inclusive Dance Outreach programs and an eight week dance class with the Down Syndrome Association of Central Kentucky.  Our June 25th, 2016 performance, Grow employed ten paid dancers, five apprentice dancers, six musicians and five aerialists. 
 
In our third season, we completed 14 Inclusive Dance Outreach programs, expanded our Healthy Movements Dance class to twenty weeks of classes with 2 age groups and added a weekly Adaptive Dance class - providing the art of dance for over 250 children with specific needs in all! An Encore performance of "GROW" was presented in January 2017 and a brand new work "In Our Element" debuted July 8th, 2017. 
 
 
 



Impact Statement
Our Director completed training with the prestigious Boston Ballet's Adaptive Dance program in July of 2015, leading to program enhancements that have greatly improved the impact and success of our Inclusive Dance Outreach programming. 
 
In our 2015/2016 season, we more than doubled our previous year's program reach- sharing the art of dance with over one hundred children with specific needs and in 2016/2017 we were able to reach over 250 children with specific needs!
 
Our Contemporary Dance company presented it's performance debut "Let Me Show You the Ropes" June 20th, 2015 at the Lyric Theatre and has since presented "Grow" June 25th, 2016, "Grow the Encore" January 14th, 2017, "In Our Element" July 8th2017 and will present an Encore of "In Our Element" January 13th, 2018 and a brand new work titled "Come Fourth" in July 2018.
 
Our goals each season include expanding our outreach to additional schools and neighboring counties, extending the length of programming offered to each group, increasing performance opportunities and to continue developing a work-study program to provide internships and employment for young adults with specific needs.
 
 In our fourth season of operation and beyond we hope to continue to build relationships with donors and sponsors and to increase awareness of our mission and support of our programs in our community.
Needs Statement Our most essential needs are funds to provide compensation for our Inclusive Dance Outreach dance instructors and our musicians who provide live interactive music accompaniment for outreach sessions. Sponsors are also needed for our January and July performances to support theatre costs, costumes and artist compensation as well as to allow us to provide complimentary performance tickets to our Inclusive Dance Outreach Program participants to be able to attend our shows with a parent or guardian.
CEO/Executive Director Statement

I have always loved to dance and knew at a very young age that dance was my passion and would be my career. I started attending summer intensives where I got to experience a wide array of styles, teachers and choreographers. It was at the Joffrey summer program in a jazz class with Mia Michaels that I first experienced the magnitude of complex emotions that can be evoked in just a simple eight counts of movement. Those eight counts- that feeling- stuck with me. I wanted to create art like that.

My senior year of high school I started auditioning for dance companies and was offered a contract with the Lexington Ballet. I will always cherish my experience as a professional ballerina, but I knew that eventually I'd be headed in a more contemporary direction. My career transitioned into teaching and choreographing, which I discovered was even more rewarding than performing.

The idea,the first hint of the concept of Allegro Dance Project, happened about five years ago when I had the pleasure of teaching a young man with autism in an open adult class. There was something very special about this young man- his determination, his sheer enjoyment of the movement. It sparked something in me and a light bulb turned on. In 2013 I read an article about the Boston Ballet's Adaptive Dance program. I couldn't ignore the light bulb any longer- it was time to realize this dream. What started as just a thought grew into a calling. I didn't know where to start, I just knew that I had to start.

So before the many mountains of non-profit paperwork, I began with a name.......

Allegro: meaning “joyful”, a brisk and lively movement. petit allegro involves small quick jumps and lightning fast footwork. Grand allegro features the enormous leaps and jumps that have become the hallmark of ballet.

Project: an individual or collaborative enterprise that is carefully planned and designed to achieve a particular aim.

Allegro Dance Project: a joyful, lively collaborative enterprise centered around the art of dance.

This project is the product of a lifetime of hard work, dedication and passion for my art and I am so excited to see it come to life in the very community that granted my dream of a professional dance career so many years ago.

I look forward to sharing my love for dance with children with specific needs, to help aspiring young dancers realize their own dreams of a professional dance career and to move audiences with my choreography.

Our partnerships with local musicians, dancers and aerial/circus artists as well as with the Lyric Theatre support our growth as a unique performing contemporary dance company.
 
 
IndicatorsHelpHow will the organization know if it is making progress? What are the key qualitative and quantitative indicators against which the organization assesses its progress toward its intended impact?
Quantitative measures include the number of children with specific needs reached through our Inclusive Dance Outreach and Adaptive Dance classes as well as the number of children who perform in and/or attend our performance events. A key milestone was reaching over 250 children during our 2016/2017 season. Our next major milestone will be to expand that reach to 400+ and we hope to achieve that by our 2018/2019 season. Another Quantitative measure is overall performance attendance as we hope to continue to grow our audience. Our total attendance to our July 8th, 2017 performance of "In Our Element" was a new milestone for us with nearly 500 attendees. Our next major milestone will be to exceed 750 attendees, which would warrant adding an additional performance to our season schedule.
 
 We depend heavily on surveys and audience feedback for qualitative indicators both for our outreach programming and performance events.  At the conclusion of each outreach program, school faculty and Physical Therapist volunteers are asked to evaluate growth of agility, balance, coordination, spatial awareness, confidence and interest/desire for continued participation in dance. We also request feedback on their overall experience, what they found most beneficial and any changes/improvements that could make our program more successful.
 
For evaluation of our performance events, we are working with the Lyric Theatre for a more in depth way to request feedback from a wider sample of our audience members to evaluate the impact of our performances. 
ProgressHelpWhat has and hasn’t been accomplished so far?
Our major accomplishments so far have been to reach over 250 children in a single year and provide them with dance training and performance opportunities and to put on brand new, innovative contemporary dance performance events each season. One major obstacle we are facing is keeping up with this growth rate. We are quickly approaching the need to hire a second outreach instructor and would also like to work towards hiring an Executive Director so that our current director can focus all of her energy on the Artistic aspect of the organization vs. doing it all. Both of these key personal additions will be an important step in ensuring our continued growth as an organization.
 
 Keeping our performance model fresh and unique is important to us and we will always strive to bring something new and exciting to our audiences in a fairly dance-saturated market. We will continue to form new partnerships and collaborations to ensure the continued progress of our performing company.

Our Inclusive Dance Outreach program provides professional dance training for children with Down Syndrome, ASD and other specific needs. By blending classical ballet, jazz and contemporary movements, our outreach program is an inclusive and engaging way for participants to explore the art of dance in the comfort and convenience of their school. Our hope is to not only instill an immediate sense of joy and artistic expression, but to ignite an ongoing interest and a desire for continued participation in dance or other creative/ performing arts and to encourage a more arts enriched lifestyle. Participants enjoy a series of 3-8 dance classes led by Artistic Director Jeana Klevene with assistance provided by a musician for live music accompaniment/ music interaction and a Physical Therapist or PT students.

Our Contemporary Dance Company provides professional employment and apprenticeship opportunities for talented young dancers in the Lexington area giving them value work experience and insight into the career of a professional dancer. The company collaborates with live musicians and aerial artists each June for an exciting performance at the historic Lyric Theatre. The company dancers and apprentice dancers will also assist some of our Inclusive Dance Outreach participants on stage for a special piece at the beginning of the show. Auditions, classes and rehearsals are led by Artistic Director Jeana Klevene.
